Moving can be an incredibly stressful process and it’s one that most people don’t look forward to even with the excitement of moving into a new home. Not only does moving take time and physical effort to do, it can also be quite expensive if it isn’t properly planned. To make moving a quicker and easier process, be sure to use the following five moving tips:
1. Downsize
There’s no point in packing and moving items that you no longer have any use for. Doing so just wastes time and energy, not to mention money. Go through your old home and get rid of anything you don’t need. Either throw away or recycle items you no longer use or that are outdated or broken (like that barely functioning VCR that’s been collecting dust in the attic) or donate items to a local Goodwill store.
2. Label All of Your Boxes
When packing your items, make sure that you organize your things before packing them. This way, it will be easy to label them. For example, a box full of dishes can simply be labeled as “dishes.” Doing this will make it easy to find exactly what you are looking for and will prevent things from getting lost. You should also consider color coding each box by the room it belongs in. Pick up some colored stickers and use them to mark each box. This will make it easy for movers to unload the truck and put the boxes in the room they belong and will help prevent that box full of silverware from ending up in the guest bedroom.
3. Begin Packing Ahead of Time
Begin packing weeks ahead of time so that you don’t stress yourself out trying to pack everything the day you’re supposed to move. Grab a calendar and do some math – even packing a few boxes every day for two weeks can help drastically reduce your work load on moving day.
4. Pack a Moving Day Kit
By the time you reach your new home, you may be too tired to begin unpacking. By packing a moving day kit, you should have instant access to everything you need for a day or two. This way you won’t have to go searching through all of your boxes for just one or two items. A moving day kit should include things like extra clothes, toilet paper, toiletry medicine, pet food, and garbage bags.
5. Get Rid of the Kids and Pets
We don’t actually mean get rid of them – but have someone watch over them on moving day when you are busy packing the last of your things and the movers are loading the truck. You don’t want to have to worry about them running around – you’re probably already stressed enough as it is.
Moving can be a huge hassle, so use these five moving solutions in order to make your move a little easier and go a little quicker, thereby making it a less stressful experience.
